De kaldte sig selv Perfektibilister, men omverden kendte dem som Illuminati. Da Adam Waishaupt dannede bevægelsen ved universitetet i Ingolstadt i 1776, var målet det perfekte samfund, og da Bayerns hertug Karl Theodor i 1777 indførte oplyst enevælde, måtte de fortsætte som hemmeligt selskab.
Flere af oplysningstidens store digtere som Johan Wolfgang von Goethe sympatiserede med bevægelsen, men i 1785 forbød Karl Theodor bevægelsen med begrundelsen at den var antireligiøs og ikke tilstrækkeligt ”fædrelandsforherligende”. Herefter var det forbundet med dødsstraf at hverve nye medlemmer.
Der blev gjort forsøg på at videreføre bevægelsen under navne som Minarvalkirken og De Usynlige Venners Orden, men uden succes. Men i populærkulturens konspirationsteorier levede den videre som Illuminati, som dog aldrig har været navn på nogen virkelig bevægelse.
